The Passage.

Case study:

A secure environment for those who need it most

The Challenge

The Passage is a registered charity dedicated to inspiring London’s homeless to transform their lives. Their resource centre is the capital’s largest for homeless and vulnerable people, providing accommodation, catering, welfare, employment, medical support and 24×7 outreach.

With so many services to manage, and to offer them to the highest standard, The Passage needed to consolidate infrastructure for data, security and operations. All within the challenging environment of a large Victorian building.

We helped The Passage implement security infrastructure without disruption.

The Solution

ExcelRedstone were appointed to deliver a mixed infrastructure including:

  • Surveillance
  • Access control
  • Personal alarm
  • Telephony
  • LAN
  • Wireless
  • Audio Visual

For the safety of clients, staff, volunteers and visitors, we approach site security with each role in mind. To access the facility, clients must be registered members of a homeless database. We built a video intercom system to confirm their identities and prevent abuse of the premises and their occupants.

Access control systems throughout the rest of the building ensured restricted movement, and made sure that staff-only areas remain just that. For more than 200 daily visitors and volunteers, we installed a network of panic buttons to keep staff aware of potentially volatile situations.

In addition to physical boundaries for personal security, we isolated surveillance and operational networks to protect their own integrity. This also had two additional benefits. Separation of systems allowed the rollout to occur in stages, avoiding disruption to the centre’s important work. It was so crucial to avoid interruption that we carried out a full rehearsal staging in our Buckinghamshire facility before deploying on-site.

It also created independent areas which could be rented out for third party AV use, generating income without worrying about access to sensitive information.

The Results

We’re privileged to be a part of the centre’s work going forward, continuing as support partners for security, telephony, AV, and ICT network.

As The Passage continues to expand and help those most in need, they will benefit from future-proof infrastructure that is ready to grow alongside them.
